Like Father, Like Son

I was straightening up our bathroom yesterday and had to laugh at my son’s book stacked above my husband’s:

The Breakfast Song

I just have to pass this along if you haven’t seen it. Eric showed it to me yesterday. My only question is, “Where’s the verse about Green Smoothies and granola?” :) Man, I wish I could have busted up in there during the recording. I may just have to redecorate my living room with an Elvis sign and a quilt. Hmmm.

Veritas History Songs

The kids and I have been learning our first year’s worth (of possibly 15-20) of Veritas History Timeline Cards since August in conjunction with our Classical Conversations weekly co-op. This past Monday we gathered around the table in excitement because we finally came to the end of the huge stack of cards! This is not a very professional video, but it gives a good idea of what can be accomplished by preschoolers with very minimal yet consistent weekly memory work. We have an audio cd that sets each weekly set (“chapter”) to music, and the kids and I love it. Sometimes there are too many syllables crammed in for the alloted notes of a song, but hey, it works! Even Meredith, two, rolls right along with us and sings most of the cards. I have been blown away by that!

If you are like me and just beginning a journey of home education (or whatever kind of education route you choose), I would encourage you to consider adding Vertias History Timeline cards to your daily routine. I am so very excited (you can tell on the video! ha!) about the foundational pegs that young children can pound into their brains that will be strong for later building blocks of education in the future! The set begins with “Creation” and covers every major world historical event / period through Modern America (the last card is the terrorist attacks of 2001).

I don’t write much about education on my blog simply because I consider myself a total novice in this area, but if you are interested, here are some of the resources I have compiled over the last few years that have benefitted me:

Continual Repentance

O God of Grace,
Thou hast imputed my sin to my substitue,
and hast imputed his righteousness
to my soul,
clothing me with a bridegroom’s robe,
decking me with jewels of holiness.
But in my Christian walk I am still in rags;
my best prayers are stained with sin;
my penitential tears are so many impurity;
my confessions of wrong are so many
aggravations of sin;
my receiving the Spirit is tinctured with
selfishness.

I need to repent of my repentance;
I need my tears to be washed;
I have no robe to bring to cover my sins,
no loom to weave my own righteousness;
I am always standing clothed in filthy garments,
and by grace am always receiving change of
raiment,
for thou dost always justify the ungodly;
I am always going into the far country,
and always returning home as a prodigal,
always saying, Father, forgive me,
and thou art always bringing forth
the best robe.

Every morning let me wear it,
every evening return in it,
go out to the day’s work in it,
be married in it,
be wound in death in it,
stand before the great white throne in it,
enter heaven in it shining as the sun.
Grant me never to lose sight of
the exceeding sinfulness of sin,
the exceeding righteousness of salvation,
the exceeding glory of Christ,
the exceeding beauty of holiness,
the exceeding wonder of grace.
