Blow out the lights, Daddy!

We got our Christmas tree last night. It was a really fun time for all of us. Even though we were tired, and it was late, we piled into our “bus” (that’s what Lydia calls it) and headed out to find our tree. Eric and I are not terribly picky about these kinds of things, but surprisingly we had three stops before we found the one we wanted. First we stopped at a farm stand-type corner lot of trees. Their trees were beautiful! Most of them were gigantic, though, like this one that even Eric had to look way up to see!

We decided against getting any of those for a practical reason: they were the $60 – $100 range. Although we are spending money for a tree, we have to really cut back on other areas of our budget this month to get one…. so these were out.

“Well, where next?” Eric asked. It was off to the only possible options, Lowe’s or Home Depot. Home Depot had several trees, but at the time they didn’t have any tall ones unless they were very skinny trees. We looked, and Lydia ran around squealing, “Kisssmas teeeeeee!” Nope. we didn’t find one. So, it was off to the last chance; the kids were getting tired.

We were disappointed to find that Lowe’s had mostly dying trees, but we searched and found a nice one that we liked just fine. Eric actually picked the thing up and lifted it over 4 stacks of cinder blocks! Woa, macho man! :)

Up it went, proudly perched on the top of the beloved Astro. I don’t know if you could find a prettier pair strolling out of Lowe’s that night: the Astro and our Christmas tree. Aren’t they beautiful?

When we got home, Eric was ecstatic to find that he had no trimming to do to get it into the stand. This was wonderful because last year he had to take a hand saw to it for at least an hour! It was rather tall, though, and when Eric said, “It’s too tall! We have to make it fit,” Lydia tried to push the wall over to “make it fit.” haha

Aunt Jenn Jenn came over, and we got the tree set up and decorated (while listening to Bing, Glenn Miller, and Phil Keaggy in the background, of course). Lydia leaned over the strand of lights and tried to blow them out like candles. We laughed so hard because Eric kept unplugging them behind his back when she would try to blow them out, and she was amazed at her strength.

It was worth searching for a good tree because it turned out to be very pretty. (In 2002 Eric and I bought a Moose to top our tree because we wanted to be fun and different. I decided to name him this year for Lydia, and we’re calling him “Bruce the Moose.”)

I always went with my dad, too, Roxanne. It was my favorite memory about Christmas growing up! Neither one of my sisters enjoyed going to get the tree, so my dad and I usually went together. When he and my mom bought an artificial tree last year, I was devastated!!!

    Kristi,

Your tree is great! I wish email addresses were listed on these blogs so I could write you an email! Just wanted to tell you that I love hearing your input into all the discussions! I love you NF people…if you could see my scores, I’m really an NF, but Russell has changed me! Nancy
